CHITTING POTATOES IN TRAYS – 2nd wk in February 2014

was emptied and arranged perfectly in trays. These chitting seed potatoes are now in the old former piggery behind the house where they will chit until planting time.

The first early, ‘Casablanca‘ may be planted on St. Patrick’s Day, if the soil conditions are dry enough by that time. Later the varieties, ‘Sante’ and ‘Orla’ will be planted as 2nd Earlies or Early Maincrop varieties, depending on the website or book being read! Finally, the maincrop, ‘Robinta’, which has a red skin like the ‘Rooster‘ will be planted with longer term storage in mind after harvesting. The ‘Robinta’ has better blight resistance than ‘Rooster’ according to the reports. Time will tell!
