PRUNED APPLE TREE AND ROSE BUSHES IN NICK OF TIME – FOURTH WEEK IN FEBRUARY 2011

In the aftermath of a traumatic General Election campaign, I have now a chance to reacquaint myself with the kitchen garden. The pear tree buds are about to burst. The blackcurrants and raspberry canes are showing some leaves. Some pruning of apple tree and rose bushes still possible as no leaves appearing just yet. These prunings are then chopped into tinder stick length for storage and drying over the summer for use to light the stove next winter.

It is a novelty to take time to just sit and think. The beautiful spring sunshine is forecast to last into the first week in March. Must not be in a hurry to sow however as night-time temperatures are expected to plummet to below freezing point. May try some indoor sowing of broad beans as I am impatient to make a start to a new year in the kitchen garden.
