Dear Birdwatch,
A Golden Eagle would be proud of your sharp and quick observation of my Blackcap story. I will take on board your apple on a stick trick. Spotted a male this morning, that is three days of Caipíní Dubha in a small garden, very encouraging. Keep up your invaluable work for biodiversity.
Beir bua is beannacht,

Hi John,
Good to hear from you. My everlasting cabbage is beginning to put on a bit of growth as weather becomes milder. I would try www.irishseedsavers.ie which is where I last found and bought this perennial brassica. If that does not work, come back to me. By then, my plant may be big enough for me to take and send you a cutting.
Happy growing,
Trevor Sargent

Having searched the internet to replace my everlasting cabbage (lost in a house move) I look on you as the font of knowlege on the subject. Sadly, I can find no source of this plant in the South of England where I live. I would be most grateful for any suggesttion of where (or if) I could get seeds, because a cutting would appear to be out of the question.

Blackcaps can winter in Ireland as unlike many warblers they can switch from insects to fruit. Try spearing an apple half on a branch to encourage them to hang around. Glad you're enjoying the magazine!

Hi Sue,

No arid land in Ireland, but sandy areas in parts of east coast can be dry during a rain free spell especially during the Summer. Generally gropwing conditions good especially if a polytunnel or greenhouse is used to extend the growing season and protect against a wet period.

Regards,

Trevor

Hi Trevor, gach rath i gcomhair an athblian. Go bmeidh blian iontach agat.

2 ceisteanan

1) What should I be planting next
2) where can I get buck;ed leaved sorrell? I had it in my last garden but it did not survive moving to this house. It was one of the most useful things I grew - great for salads, soups, fillings for omlettes and sauces for fish.

best regards

Hi there. I'd like to know where in Ireland are the most fertile growing conditions to produce the widest range of fruit and vegetable crops (small hobby farm or family garden). I need to know about soil content and chemistry, temperature and growing season, rainfall. I assume there is no arid land in Ireland. Can anyone help me?
