Roger’s powerpoint showed the Obama family giving true leadership, ‘Yes we can grow carrots’!
Roger Doiron, from Scarborough, north of Boston, USA, came to address the GIY Gathering in Waterford at the weekend. His powerpoint presentation was probably the wittiest, most thought provoking and informative I have ever seen. Roger was the man who picked up the phone to the White House to suggest that Michelle Obama as First Lady dig up the lawn to plant fruit and vegetables with local school children.
Roger was singing my song! Local cultivation of any vacant green spaces will be soon de rigeur if food riots due to rising food rises and food shortages are to be avoided. If only kitchen garden could catch on in the way sex sells, then humanity might become more sustainable with less breeding and more feeding. Roger is certainly to be applauded for his World Kitchen Garden Day initiative which has been an annual celebration all over the world on August 26th each year. Roll on next year!
